The Winn Family Association (WFA), proudly operating and managing the Winn Family League, is fully committed to protecting match officials from discrimination, racism, abuse, harassment, intimidation, and threatening behaviour of any kind. Match officials play an essential role in maintaining fairness, integrity, safety, and respect throughout all competitions and league activities, and they deserve to carry out their responsibilities in a safe and supportive environment.
The WFA believes that discrimination toward referees, officials, umpires, judges, volunteers, and league representatives is completely unacceptable. Every match official should be treated with dignity, professionalism, and respect at all times, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, or personal background.
This guidance has been created to support match officials in recognising, responding to, and reporting discriminatory behaviour while helping maintain safe and respectful league environments.
WFA zero tolerance policy
The Winn Family Association operates with zero tolerance toward:
- Racism
- Discrimination
- Harassment
- Hate speech
- Bullying
- Threatening behaviour
- Abuse toward officials
- Intimidation or victimisation
- Offensive gestures or language
- Online abuse targeting match officials
Discriminatory behaviour toward match officials will always be treated as a serious disciplinary matter.
Examples of discriminatory behaviour
Discrimination may occur verbally, physically, online, indirectly, or through abusive conduct. Match officials should be aware that unacceptable behaviour can include:
- Racist comments or slurs
- Mocking accents, backgrounds, or cultures
- Sexist or discriminatory language
- Homophobic or transphobic abuse
- Disability-related insults
- Offensive chants or gestures
- Threats or intimidation
- Harassment during or after matches
- Social media abuse targeting officials
- Deliberate exclusion or unfair treatment
- Repeated aggressive conduct connected to personal identity
Any form of discrimination is unacceptable regardless of intent or circumstance.
Responsibilities of match officials
Match officials are expected to:
- Act professionally and fairly
- Promote respect and equality
- Remain calm during difficult situations
- Report discriminatory incidents appropriately
- Support safe and inclusive environments
- Follow WFA safeguarding and disciplinary procedures
Officials should never feel pressured to ignore abuse or discriminatory conduct. The WFA fully supports officials who report concerns in good faith.
What match officials should do during an incident
If discriminatory behaviour occurs during a match or event, officials should prioritise safety and follow league procedures where appropriate. Possible actions may include:
- Warning individuals involved
- Stopping play temporarily
- Reporting incidents to league organisers
- Requesting assistance from event staff or security
- Removing individuals where league rules allow
- Abandoning events if safety risks become serious
Match officials should always consider the safety of players, spectators, volunteers, and themselves before taking action. The WFA recognises that every incident is different, and officials are expected to use professional judgement based on the circumstances.

Online and social media abuse
Discrimination and harassment directed at match officials online are treated just as seriously as abuse occurring in person. Officials should:
- Avoid engaging with abusive individuals online
- Save screenshots or evidence where possible
- Report abusive content to league organisers
- Use privacy and security settings responsibly
- Seek support if online abuse becomes distressing
The WFA may investigate online conduct where it affects league safety, integrity, or the wellbeing of officials.
Support for match officials
The Winn Family Association recognises that discrimination and abuse can have serious emotional, mental, and professional impacts on match officials. Officials are encouraged to:
- Speak with league organisers

Responsibilities of clubs, teams, and spectators
Everyone involved in the Winn Family League shares responsibility for protecting match officials from discrimination and abuse. Players, teams, coaches, spectators, and volunteers are expected to:
- Respect officials and their decisions
- Challenge discriminatory behaviour responsibly
- Promote fair play and inclusion
- Avoid aggressive or abusive conduct
- Help maintain safe environments
- Support league standards and policies
Respect for match officials is essential to maintaining fair and enjoyable competition.
Disciplinary action
Any person found responsible for discriminatory behaviour toward match officials may face disciplinary action including:
- Formal warnings
- Suspensions
- Removal from venues or events
- Competition bans
- Permanent exclusion from WFA activities
- Reporting to relevant authorities where appropriate
The seriousness of disciplinary action will depend on the nature and severity of the incident.
